Importance of Posture

Posture is essentially the position of the body in space. Optimal posture is the state of muscular and skeletal balance that protects the supporting structures of the body against injury or deformity, whether at work or rest. These supporting structures are the spine column and spinal cord. Correct posture involves the positioning of the spinal joints (vertebrae) to provide the least amount of stress on the joints of the body. Therefore , faulty posture increases stress on the joints and ultimately can damaged the surrounding tissue . At Hull Chiropractic we like to think of your posture like a chain link; your vertebrae are the links, if the links are in knots or in kinks the chain doesn't work well. Your spine is the same way and your posture is a mirror of what is going on in the spine. A kink in the chain may cause problems way down the chain, therefore a problem with your foot may be caused by a “kink” in your low back.

These “kinks” form subluxations. In simplest terms, a subluxation is when one or more of the bones of your spine (vertebrae) move out of position and create pressure on, or irritate spinal nerves. Spinal nerves are the nerves that come out from between each of the bones in your spine. This pressure or irritation on the nerves then causes those nerves to malfunction and interfere with the signals traveling over those nerves.

How does this affect you?  Your nervous system controls and coordinates all the functions of your body. If you interfere with the signals traveling over nerves, parts of your body will not get the proper nerve messages and will not be able to function at 100% of their abilities. This nerve interference can cause poor health. In other words, some part of your body will not be working properly. So If you have “kinks” in your spine your body will not be able to function at 100% and these kinks can be a mirror to your posture.

Forward Head Posture

The most common form of poor posture is Forward Head Syndrome. The syndrome is caused when the spinal curves of the neck and shoulders weaken, due to gravity, trauma and the weight of the head. This causes the head and neck to move forward. This constant posture can cause many adverse health conditions. The pictures below are examples of what this posture can look like.

Forward head posture will cause stretching of the spinal cord as the head and shoulders move forward. This leads to a narrowing of the diameter of the spinal cord. This narrowing causes pressure on the surrounding tissue and nerves. If this posture is not corrected it leads to continuing narrowing of the spinal cord resulting in decreased nerve signals (life flowing energy) to all the vital organs and functions of your body.
