Sciatica Syndrome: Etiology, Causes & Risk Factors

Sciatica occurs when one of your sciatic nerves becomes pinched by something, such as a subluxated joint, decreased joint space, injured or spasmed muscle, injured disc, or tumor (the right and left sciatic nerves are the largest nerves in your body and exit the spinal cord in the lower spine area, going on to branch off and innervate your buttocks and legs). This compression causes irritation and damage to the nerve tissue, resulting in a variety of uncomfortable symptoms (discussed shortly).

Sciatica often occurs in people who have physically demanding occupations or perform a lot of heavy lifting and repetitive movement which tend to strain the lower back connective tissues. Additional factors may include overweight/obesity, smoking, psychological stress, sedentary behavior, and acute trauma.

Signs & Symptoms of Sciatica

Most people with sciatica complain of searing, sharp, burning, and/or stabbing nerve pain in one of their legs (instead of dull or achy). This pain can extend from the buttocks to the back of the leg, and may be accompanied by other classic signs and symptoms of nerve damage: numbness, tingling, and weakness.

This pain may be constant or it may come and go, ranging from mild to severe. It can be worse if sitting or after prolonged standing. Understandably, many people find sciatica to be debilitating, limiting their ability to participate in typical work and leisure activities.

Chiropractic Care Options for People with Sciatica

If you have sciatica and haven't consulted with a doctor of chiropractic, we encourage you to consider it. Our services facilitate your body's natural ability to heal itself, which can accelerate your recovery without exposing you to harmful adverse reactions. While individual plans of care vary, typical chiropractic services for sciatica include:

  • Spinal decompression gets to the (nerve) root of the problem by alleviating pressure on the sciatic nerve and facilitating tissue healing through intermittent oscillatory movement
  • Chiropractic adjustments realign the entire spinal chain and trigger the release of natural analgesics to offer (often immediate) pain relief
  • Corrective exercises teach you how to maximize your core stabilization to maintain and enhance the benefits conferred via adjustments
